We are a Machine Learning startup based in California and we are looking for a motivated Head of Engineering for a legal AI product.

Have you ever signed a contract but not really understood what it said? Us too.
Contracts are the foundation of all commerce, but they're basically impossible to understand. They're dense and filled with jargon. Oftentimes, they're literally written in Latin.
SpeedLegal SaaS platform helps busy professionals e.g. salespeople and buyers close deals 3X faster (200% revenue accelerator) and save ~$60k-140k in legal fees when reviewing contracts.
About you
- Minimum 2 years of relevant software development experience as a full-stack developer (mandatory)
- Experience with ML / NLP (mandatory)
- Experience with leading a team
- MERN stack - MongoDB, ExpressJS, ReactJS, NodeJS (API development), GraphQL
- Knowledge of Data Structures and Algorithms
- UI/UX experience - Figma, Custom CSS, Material UI and Semantic UI
- Experience of collaborative coding with GIT
- Unit/Integration testing
- Good knowledge of HTML5, CSS3
- Good knowledge of Docker, Celery, Fast API
- Experience with AWS and Google Cloud Platform
- Previous experience working for small startups is a strong plus
- Experience working in a self-managed agile workflow
- Strong ability to work and collaborate with small teams
- Passionate about product and product development

Regarding your career path for this role, as our startup expands, we envision that you will progress into higher-level positions within the engineering team. It is not our belief that individuals should assume a management role if they do not possess a passion for it, but if you do, opportunities for managerial positions such as Tech Lead Engineer, Engineering Manager, or Director will be accessible. Moreover, we have observed that numerous founding engineers have excelled as product managers, and this is certainly an option for you at SpeedLegal.
Location: The position is of a hybrid nature. As a small startup, we wish to remain adaptable, but currently, we place a significant emphasis on spending time collectively to brainstorm and promptly refine our product.
We offer a compensation package consisting of a competitive base salary, determined by your experience. In addition, you will receive a significant initial equity grant (between 0.1% to 0.5%) in our company as you will be one of the initial employees.
